Position reports to: Design Manager
Job Purpose
To provide technical input and engineering expertise to ensure that customer component designs are optimised for manufacture, ensuring cost-effectiveness, quality, and compliance with industry standards. This will involve working collaboratively with customers, suppliers, and internal teams to deliver innovative, practical solutions, using CAD tools and simulation packages.
The Design Engineer will support the professional and profitable running of the company by:
- Producing accurate and manufacturable CAD models, engineering drawings, and technical specifications, to be approved by customer.
- Collaborating with customers and internal stakeholders to achieve optimum designs that meet functional, quality, and financial objectives.
- Supporting the development of tooling, process simulations, and continuous improvement projects across the engineering function.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsibility for the Environmental, Health and Safety of yourself and your colleagues at all times.
- Produce and modify CAD models and technical drawings for components and tooling (SolidWorks essential).
- Liaise with customers and third parties to review and optimise component designs for manufacturability.
- Use simulation tools to assess casting performance and identify potential quality or process risks.
- Support tooling design for manufacturing processes, including patterns, gauges, and fixturing.
- Maintain accurate engineering documentation, including design specifications, revision control, and ERP updates.
- Where able assist with technical problem-solving for internal and customer issues, ensuring timely and effective resolutions.
- Contribute to research and development projects, applying engineering principles to develop innovative solutions.
- Work closely with the Quality team to review inspection methods and analyse measurement data.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Sales, Quality, and Production, to support new product introduction and continuous improvement.
- Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations as required.
- Maintain confidentiality and integrity of engineering data at all times.

Environmental, Health and Safety
- Ensure compliance with all company health and safety procedures and safe working practices.
- Report any hazards, near misses, or accidents promptly to the relevant personnel.
Planning and Communication
- Manage own workload effectively, prioritising projects to meet deadlines.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues, customers, and suppliers.
- Participate actively in team meetings and project reviews.
Housekeeping
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised working environment in line with 5S standards.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify and support opportunities for improving processes, reducing costs, and enhancing product quality.
- Contribute ideas and feedback to improve efficiency and effectiveness within the engineering team.
Essential Requirements
- Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Product Design, Manufacturing, or related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 2 yearsโ experience in CAD modelling and technical drawing for manufacture (SolidWorks).
- Strong understanding of engineering principles, manufacturing methods (e.g., casting, forging, machining).
- Ability to interpret and produce engineering drawings in compliance with BS8888 standards, strong understanding of GD&T.
- Experience collaborating with customers and internal teams in a technical, problem-solving capacity.
- Competent user of standard office software (Word, Excel, cloud platforms).
- Strong attention to detail, excellent organisational skills, and ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Desirable Requirements
- Knowledge and experience of investment casting, die casting, or metallurgical processes.
- Experience with toolmaking principles and tooling design.
- Familiarity with casting simulation tools and process analysis software.
- Understanding of machining processes and post-production finishing.
- Knowledge of ERP/MRP systems and drawing revision control processes.
- Experience using and interpreting measurement data (e.g., CMM reports).
- Awareness of regulatory requirements in aerospace, defence, or similar sectors.
