Dean Group International exhibited at 'Mode of Production' which was held at the London Design Festival Ltd from the 20th to the 23rd of September 2007. Designers from all over Europe attended the exhibition which pays homage to the wealth of manufacturing heritage and expertise in the UK.
'Mode of Production' showcased installations that demonstrate materials and manufacturing processes for designers, architects and engineers and was an opportunity to see how products are made, discover innovative materials and meet the manufacturers behind the processes. There were examples of manufacturing in plastic, glass, ceramic, wood and metal.
The new book by Rob Thompson, 'Manufacturing Processes for Design Professionals', was previewed at the exhibition and was a great success with all available books being sold.
Rob has travelled to some of the most innovative factories in the world (including Dean Group International) in search of exciting case studies and has identified a gap in designers’ knowledge between how something is actually made and the capability of manufacturing processes. His book is due to become a bible for designers for years to come.
Dean Group International’s Managing Director, Chris Dean, reported that they had been very well received at the exhibition and that promotional material had had to be rationed so that it didn’t run out, “The exhibition has certainly helped to raise our profile throughout Europe and the overwhelming majority of the visitors were in support of our strategy of low volume UK manufacture and medium to high volume overseas. However, it was surprising how many designers did not previously know about investment castings.”
